What is One More Soul?

One More Soul (OMS) is a non-profit apostolate dedicated to spreading the truth about the harms of contraception and the blessings of children. OMS was founded in 1993 by Steve Koob and Mary Ann Walsh, two Dayton, Ohio, pro-life leaders. Through their pro-life work they came to realize that the foundation of abortion is contraception, and that contraception must be rooted out before abortion will be unthinkable. The more they learned about contraception the more they were convinced that it is the root cause of numerous social ills.

Steve and Mary Ann felt a responsibility to share what they had learned with their fellow pro-lifers, Christians and the world. They decided to do this by distributing educational resources explaining the truth about contraception, and promoting a pro-child attitude. They began One More Soul to achieve these goals. The name "One More Soul" sprang from their hope that through the grace of God and their efforts, "one more soul" would be created for the kingdom of God. Since the creation of a single human soul is more awesome than the creation of the entire material universe, one soul would easily justify all their efforts.

We at One More Soul are convinced that contraception does immeasurable harm to women, marriages, the Church, and society. We have come to realize that contraceptive use destroys marriages. We know that the side effects of using contraception (especially hormonal contraceptives like the Birth Control Pill, Norplant, and Depo-Provera) are very dangerous to a woman's health - even life threatening. Women have been lied to about these health risks, or never told there are risks.

We also understand that contraception is spiritually harmful. Contraception is against God's will as can be determined from human nature, the Bible, and the teachings of the Catholic Church.

We believe that contraception is firmly linked to abortion, and that the massive abortion industry would not exist were it not for today's contraceptive mindset. We recognize that contraception not only encourages premarital and extramarital sex, but also makes them plausible. Contraception separates conception from inter-course so perversely that people "forget" that having sex makes babies. Sexuality is robbed of its meaning, leading to multiplication of cheapened "sex acts" which are neither bonding nor fruitful. The mental separation of sex from procreation, however, does not control biology. All contraceptives do sometimes fail - even sterilization. When a child is conceived, that child is not the anticipated result of sex, but an unexpected "problem." That "problem" is all too often "solved" by abortion.

We understand that, sadly, many people who use contraception are not aware (and have never been informed) of the consequences of their choice.

We believe that every child is a supreme gift, no matter what the circumstances of his or her conception. We know there can be some very painful circumstances surrounding pregnancy. However, we believe, as it says in Psalm 127, that "Children are a gift from God." We have no doubt that the most generous and loving statement any married couple can make is "We will lovingly accept all the children God gives us."

We understand that parenting is a tremendous opportunity for salvation, and a considerable challenge. We endorse fertility appreciation methods (Natural Family Planning) that can help to achieve pregnancy, as well as to avoid pregnancy when serious reasons make this necessary.

One More Soul operates as a mail/phone/electronic order apostolate and as a distribution center for One More Soul published books, pamphlets, and tapes, information and resources. We offer these and other publishers' resources describing the effects of contraception and the blessings of children. While most of our resources have a Catholic origin, we also have materials produced by non-Catholics. We request donations for our materials and for extending our apostolate.

Our most popular and powerful resource is a presentation titled "Contraception, Why Not" by Professor Janet E. Smith, PhD, on audio and videotape. Professor Smith teaches at Ave Maria College, is a Consultor to the Pontifical Council for the Family, and has spoken to audiences all over the world on the topic of contraception. In her logical, witty, non-judgmental way, she explains clearly what the Catholic Church teaches and why. While not neglecting figures and statistics, she uses common sense and many personal anecdotes to make the presentation universally enjoyable and enlightening.
